Sinossi:
Farsa triste. La mamma organizza per suo figlio una grandiosa festa BirthGay a sorpresa, celebrando un anno dalla sua uscita allo scoperto.

Parole del regista: “Happy BirthGay è il prodotto della mia esplorazione delle dinamiche relazionali all’interno della mia famiglia. Mette in evidenza l’armadio della madre piuttosto che quello del figlio. Attraverso l’eccentrico personaggio principale della mamma, il cortometraggio esamina il mondo interiore dei genitori dei gay, una prospettiva meno comune vista nei film.
L’impostazione è nel nostro tempo e la cultura, dove accettare l’omosessualità è considerato un consenso tra la maggioranza. Tuttavia, il cammino verso l’autentica accettazione deve ancora essere lontano tra molte famiglie, per quanto liberali.
L’over-the-top BirthGay partito fornisce un punto di vista divertente delle questioni complesse che il film si occupa. Mi sono divertito a presentarvi la mamma che esagera nei suoi sforzi, la nonna che non dovrebbe nasconderle nulla, e il figlio che è imbarazzato dall'”accettazione” di cui non ha realmente bisogno. Il messaggio che portano è, ovviamente, che l’omosessualità non dovrebbe essere un grosso problema. La farsa si intensifica alla luce delle cornici colorate, dei drammatici movimenti della macchina da presa e della musica horror, che contrasta la celebrazione e contemporaneamente rappresenta l’orrore che ciascuno dei personaggi sperimenta.
Ad un livello più profondo, il film affronta le dinamiche intergenerazionali all’interno delle famiglie, sia sulla percezione del genere e dell’orientamento sessuale, sia nelle relazioni interpersonali. Si occupa anche del peso dei segreti di famiglia che consumano energia e spesso tramandati di generazione in generazione. Creare questo film è stata per me un’esperienza eccezionale, istruttiva e commovente. Spero che tocchi i vostri cuori e sia trovato degno di schermo al vostro festival.”
Biofilmografia:
Niv Manzur, regista israeliano. Nato nel 1996. Ha studiato cinematografia alla Hasifa School – Communication Arts & Digital di Tel Aviv, oltre a recitare presso The Performing Arts Studio fondato da Yoram Leowenstein. Possiede una laurea in Sociologia presso la Open University of Israel. “Happy BirthGay” è il suo primo film. Attualmente sta producendo un altro cortometraggio e sta scrivendo la sceneggiatura per un nuovo lungometraggio.

Synopsis:
Sad farce. Mom throws her son a huge surprise BirthGay party, celebrating one year since he came out.
The short was selected for the TlvFest – Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Festival (2023).
Words from the director: “Happy BirthGay is the product of my exploration of the relationship dynamics within my family. It highlights the mother’s closet rather than the son’s. Through the eccentric mother character, the short film examines the inner world of gay parents, a less common perspective seen in films.
The setting is in our time and culture, where accepting homosexuality is considered a consensus among the majority. However, the path to true acceptance is still a long way off among many families, no matter how liberal.
The over-the-top BirthGay party provides an entertaining perspective on the complex issues that the film deals with. I enjoyed introducing you to the mother who exaggerates in her efforts, the grandmother who shouldn’t hide anything from her, and the son who is embarrassed by the “acceptance” he doesn’t really need. The message they carry is, of course, that homosexuality shouldn’t be a big deal. The farce intensifies in light of the colored frames, dramatic camera movements and horror music, which contrasts the celebration and simultaneously represents the horror that each of the characters experiences.
On a deeper level, the film addresses intergenerational dynamics within families, both on the perception of gender and sexual orientation, and in interpersonal relationships. It also deals with the weight of energy-consuming family secrets often passed down from generation to generation. Creating this film was an exceptional, educational and moving experience for me. I hope it touches your hearts and is found worthy of screen at your festival.”

Niv Manzur, Israeli director. Born in 1996. He studied cinematography at the Hasifa School – Communication Arts & Digital in Tel Aviv, as well as acting at The Performing Arts Studio founded by Yoram Leowenstein. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the Open University of Israel. “Happy BirthGay” is his first film. He is currently producing another short film and writing the screenplay for a new feature film.
